About Jim Hood
I started fixing computers my freshman year in college at Illinois State University. I was employed by the Computer Services department, and was part of a small team responsible for keeping things running in a lab with 200 Windows computers and 150 Macs that was used by over 12,000 students and professors every week.
My time was split pretty evenly between keeping the computers working and answering questions/solving problems for 30-40 people a day, so I became quite comfortable woking with both machines and people. Every semester, I would get thank you cards from professors expressing their gratitude for my help in keeping their classes running smoothly, and it felt great being acknowledged and appreciated for my work!
Even though I graduated with a B.A. in psychology, and a M.A. in gerontology, I decided upon graduation that I was enjoying the combo of working with computers and people so much that I was going to keep at it, and here I am 14 years later, still loving what I do!
What Makes Mobile Computer Doctor Different?
I like to think that I specialize in fostering a good relationship between the user and their devices. Whether you know it or not, you are in a relationship with your computer, and I think what makes my approach different is my emphasis on this relationship, rather than just focusing on the computer itself. Without the user, the computer is just a box of plastic and metal, but when paired with the user, the computer becomes a tool of almost limitless potential.
While I do offer the same hardware and software repair services that most computer technicians offer, like virus removal, hard drive replacement, or upgrades, what I really enjoy doing is pairing a person with the right hardware and software to help them do what they are passionate about doing, whether that is digital photography, graphic design, drafting, writing, or just about anything else you can think of!
I absolutely love helping people empower themselves through the use of technology. From helping a new business get off the ground by helping setup their computers or a website, to teaching a tutu how to use Skype so she can keep in touch with her granddaughter who just went to the mainland for college, I love it all.
